The Story Solver
Recently I had the privilege of hearing a presentation by Peter Legge. He’s one of the top 20 motivational speakers in North America. Right off the top, before he got down to the motivational part he told his audience “It’s all about the story telling.” And, lest we had missed it the first time he repeated it, “”It’s all about the story telling.” And his speech was about 75% story telling.
It doesn’t matter whether you are writing articles for print or for the web, training workers, sharing information, selling a product, branding a company or making a speech. It’s still all about story telling.
Information is cheap. It used to be valuable when it was in the hands of a few but the internet has completely devalued its currency. Facts and data come at us from all sides and we intend to remember them, really we do. Then, all too often they settle like mud in a jar of pond water.
However the story, well told, floats on top. We are much more likely to remember it and the tidbit of knowledge that came with it.
That’s because a story hits us at the level of the imagination, the feelings and even the emotions. The relevant facts hitch a ride on those feelings straight to the brain. It does not just sink to the bottom amid all the other muddy puddles of facts.
Stories, especially those very short stories such as examples and anecdotes, need to be crafted carefully. They may appear simple and straightforward but an experienced speaker or writer will have selected them carefully, adapted them and rehearsed them. Along with imagination goes logic and consistency. Left brain and right brain.
The Story Solver is a blog that helps you tell better stories. It presents bite-sized nuggets of ‘how to tell a story’.
Please, polish your storytelling skills. The world needs more good story tellers.
Love your book and would like to buy 2 more copies. Where can I do that?
